Create an image of a building using two-point perspective.
Duration: 2-3 class periods
Open Photoshop by clicking on the icon on the dock
Press +N to open a new Photoshop document.
Make the image 500 x 400 pixels.
Give it a white background.
Save to your work folder.
Make sure that you can see your rulers. If they are not visible press +R
Make sure that your ruler is in inches.
If you need to adjust the rulers select +K. And then +5.
From the top ruler, click inside the white area of the ruler and drag a line down to 2.5 inches on the vertical ruler:
The next steps depend on where you place your vanishing points.
If you want to include them in your image, follow this . If you want to place them off to the sides, beyond the image, follow this .
Select the ellipse tool from the shape tool
Using the options at the top, set it to a fixed size of 3px x 3px >
Click and drag on both ends of the line to create vanishing points (You might need to use the Move tool to adjust the positions):
Click on the New Layer Icon to create a new layer:
Select the line tool from the Shape tool. Then set the options like this:
Hold the SHIFT key and draw a vertical line whose top is below the horizon
line.
Connect the top and bottom of the vertical line to both vanishing points
While holding down the SHIFT key, draw two more verticals to describe the two sides of the building.
Draw lines to connect the tops to opposite vanishing points
Draw a vertical line for the back wall
With the line create diagonals across the front:
With the line tool create diagonals across the back, then draw vertical lines:
Decide how high you want your roof to be and draw a line from that point the the vanishing point on the opposite side:
Add lines to complete the roof:
Press F on the keyboard to Change Screen Mode. You want to extend the frame beyond your document.
Move the vertical guides to create your vanishing points outside your document
Click on the New Layer Icon to create a new layer:
Select the line tool from within the Shape Tool (U). Then set the options like this:

Connect the top and bottom of the vertical line to both vanishing points
While holding down the SHIFT key, draw two more verticals to describe the two sides of the building.

Click on the background layer.
Create a new layer by clicking on the New Layer Icon
Use the Marquee tool to make the front. Fill the front of the building with a dark color
Select Transform—>distort and move handles to conform to lines:
Create a new layer.
Use the Marquee tool to create the rectangle.
Fill the side of the building with a lighter color:
Select Transform—>distort to change the side of the barn.
Create a new layer and repeat for the roof
Complete the roof by selecting the polygonal Lasso Tool.
Click on the three points of the triange.
Fill shape with a color (+G):
Lower the opacity of lines layer.
Click on the New Layer Icon to create a new layer:
Select black (press +D) and then select the line tool and create lines like this to create a door
Create a door
Create a new layer underneath the lines. Create a rectangle with the Marquee tool.
Fill with a color.
Press Transform—>distort and adjust handles
Click on the top layer, then click on the New Layer Icon to create a new layer:
Create lines like this to create windows
Draw a diagonal from the top right corner to the bottom left.
Draw a parallel line and finish the second window.
Create a new layer underneath the lines. Use the Marquee lasso tool create a rectangle over the window shapes
Fill
Edit—>Transform—>distort and pull handles
Turn off lines:
Click on BACKGROUND layer then create a new layer
Create a rectangle from the horizon line to the bottom.
Fill with a green
Create a rectangle from the horizon line to the top.
Fill with a blue
Create a new layer for the sun (I used a distort—>ripple filter)
Create new layers for each cloud
The shape of the shadow depends of
The direction of the sun
The position of your object
The shape of the area on which the shadow falls.
As the sun moves, the shadow changes. If your object moves, the shadow also changes.
To create a shadow: Drop a vertical line down from the sun to where it would hit the ground.
From the same point on the sun draw lines through the all points of the roof to the ground
Draw lines from where the sun hits the ground through all the bottom corners until the lines cross the other lines
Create a new layer. Use Polygonal Lasso Tool and draw a selection
Create a new layer
Select a color and fill
Turn off LINES layer
Link all barn layers and then select merge linked from right menu (or use +E)
